Protest march: Migrant women demonstrate in Hamburg against the oppression of women and girls
Our motto: "Equal, self-determined, free" for the rights of women
With this march we demand:
We say NO
In 2018, the #MeToo debate about sexism and sexual violence against women also reached its peak in Germany. In 2019, growing misogyny is more of an issue than ever. On the occasion of International Women's Day, International Women in Power (IWP), together with the initiative at the grassroots level, in cooperation with the Hamburg Alliance, calls for an international March 8 strike . We stand up for the rights of women in Germany and in countries where women are worthless. We show our solidarity in particular with women and girls who suffer from the knuckle of Islamic Sharia
For decades we have been watching with great concern the dwindling freedom of women and girls in the Islamic world, but increasingly also in Europe. While here in Germany the headscarf is celebrated as a symbol of feminine self-determination, activists who take to the streets in Iran without a headscarf end up in prison. So also the prominent lawyer Nasrin Sotudeh, who was arrested in June 2018 for defending three women's rights activists. That is why we also support Terre des Femmes eV's petition "Keeping your head free" during our march, which advocates a ban on children's headscarves in Germany. But not only women, children too are the ones to suffer. In Iran, many of the 7 million street children are abused for the drug trade and are often raped.
The "Women and Migrants March" campaign was a big topic in the regional and national press. The march was widely announced in public, so that many fellow demonstrators were expected. As it was supposed to be the first Hamburg women and migrant march, the media for the first time expressed positive criticism. A few days before the event, the controversial topic of "wearing a headscarf" sparked a heated discussion with the consequence that some of the co-exhibitors withdrew their participation and negative criticism was expressed in the media.

EMMA (The Political Magazine for People) is associated with the term emancipation and has been a model of feminism since its first issue.
Both articles about the march and about the organizer, Ms. Hourvash Pourkian, illustrate that, despite the boycott, on the one hand it was a successful and happy protest march . On the other hand, Ms. Pourkian continued to show a lot of courage and indicated freedom of expression with regard to the controversial topic of "wearing the headscarf".
Wednesday June 28, 2017
Some organizations have distanced themselves from the event with the statement, but the action was a successful march as a sign of more solidarity and against misogyny. The Kulturbrücke Hamburg eV was strengthened by this march, so that it will continue to campaign for it.
